Be The Reason We Grow

Help us future-proof the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre

For more than 20 years, the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre has been a place where people come together for support and community connection.

Built through a community-led movement, the pavilion-style centre was designed to reflect the tropical character of Port Douglas — open, welcoming and connected to its environment. Today, it remains the heart of community support in Port Douglas and surrounds.

The comfort and needs of our community are changing, and the building needs to evolve with it.

We are now raising $170,000 to upgrade and protect this much-loved community space — ensuring it remains safe, functional and resilient for years to come. Whilst we are continuing to apply for grants and government funding, these are not guaranteed so the support of individuals, businesses and organisations is vital to ensure the completion of this project.

With your support this project is due to start in August 2026 and be completed by June 2027.

Why this upgrade matters

Anyone who has experienced a Far North Queensland wet season knows how intense the heat and humidity can become.

During the hotter months, the building becomes difficult to use comfortably, limiting our ability to run programs, host visiting services and provide a safe gathering space for the community. This particularly impacts vulnerable and socially isolated community members who rely on the Centre for connection and support.

The need became even clearer during Cyclone Jasper in 2023, when the Centre became the local Community Recovery Hub.

From emergency food distribution and bottled water collection to emotional support and recovery services, the Centre played a critical role in supporting community recovery. However, the experience also highlighted the limitations of our current building — including the lack of secure storage, private meeting spaces and climate-controlled areas during extreme heat and humidity.

This project will help ensure we are better prepared for future disaster events while improving comfort, accessibility and safety year-round.

Preserving the character of the building

This is not about replacing the heart of our Centre, we are committed to preserving the unique character of the building while carefully upgrading it to better suit our tropical climate and growing community needs.

To guide this process, we have worked with Danny Vos, a local architect experienced in renovating pavilion-style buildings, ensuring the upgrades remain sympathetic to the original design and the integrity of the space.

The design will:

  • Enable the Centre to be securely locked after hours, protecting this important community asset and improving safety for staff, visiting services and community members.
  • Redesigning our key gathering areas using resilient, climate-appropriate materials
  • Creating secure, lockable storage for emergency supplies and equipment
  • Creating new office space, ensuring privacy and functionality for visiting support and recovery services
  • Ensuring flexibility so spaces can still open naturally during favourable weather

The outcome will be a Centre that remains open, welcoming and distinctly Port Douglas — while being more resilient and usable throughout the year.

Supporting local community and local business

We are proud to be working with a small local builder, Legacy Build Group, helping keep investment and employment within the Douglas Shire community.

Legacy Build Group are sympathetic to our need to remain open to the community throughout these works and will be delivering the renovations in a staged process.

This project is community supporting community.

Plant our future - Mangrove Donation Mural

The Mangrove Tree Fundraiser Mural will become a lasting symbol of community support, connection and growth at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. Inspired by the strength and resilience of the mangroves that thrive in our region, the mural represents how our community grows stronger when we support one another.

Community members, families and businesses will have the opportunity to purchase a leaf with their name, family name or business name permanently recognised as part of this special community artwork.

Large or small, every donation helps our community continue to grow.

As part of the campaign, the individual or business making the largest donation will receive naming rights to our new community BBQ shed — a space designed to bring people together through connection, celebration and community gatherings for years to come.
